2020 Virtual Interns!

Carly grew up in New Hartford and graduated from New Hartford Senior High School in 2018. She currently attends NYU where she studies Business with concentrations in Economics & Management. This summer, Carly focused on Marketing and assisted the Employee Benefits team.

This summer, I was able to get a glimpse into the world of risk management and insurance through GKG. This internship exposed me to various components of the firm’s operations, but I largely worked on Marketing and Branding projects. I also assisted the Employee Benefits team frequently and sat in on their weekly meetings.

My favorite project this year was working on the firm’s annual Boilermaker commercial. I pitched my idea and worked throughout the summer to get it completed. It involved a lot of moving parts but it was so rewarding to see the finished product!

Throughout the internship I was able to brush up on my graphic design and website development skills. I was able to work with business platforms such as Outlook, WordPress, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Canva, and Adobe, which are great technical skills for my resume.

The aspect that made my internship “Far from Ordinary” was the people. When looking for an internship, company culture is something applicants rarely consider, but it can make or break your experience at the company or even the industry. The group of employees at GKG make working at an insurance agency…fun! The team at GKG goes out of their way to make you feel welcome and special (even during a pandemic)! In my first week, I was sent a handwritten welcome note, a GKG Coffee Mug, and a package of Utica Coffee for our virtual, company-wide “Coffee Talk” held every Friday.

No matter what internship position you apply for at GKG, you will receive a far from ordinary experience with extraordinary people.

Connor grew up in New Hartford and graduated from New Hartford Senior High School in 2017. He is a rising senior at Stevenson University where he studies Business Administration and Marketing and plays Lacrosse. This summer, Connor worked with our Commercial Lines team and focused on data management and client services.

This summer at GKG I worked closely with the Commercial Lines team with a focus on Data Management. Throughout the summer, I’ve worked on various projects involving the new management system here at GKG, Applied Epic. I learned how to navigate the system, use the system efficiently to keep track of data, and how this new software will help GKG become more efficient in their day to day activities.

My favorite part of this summer was learning how to build reports. Through building reports, I’m able to help the GKG team stay on track with client’s insurance renewal process, claim reports, and audits. Being able to create reports that help the GKG team conduct business more efficiently justifies that I am not just an intern, but a part of the GKG team.

Even though this summer internship was unorthodox, GKG stayed one step ahead and made the internship seem as normal as possible. Through the use of MAX UC, I was able to stay in touch with other team members via video conference and chat to make it feel as normal as possible.
